Systemic Amebiasis Involving Both Kidneys and Liver in a Patient with Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

|
|
aintestinal amebiasis consists mainly of amebic liver abscess. The genitourinary amebiasis is rare and is confined to the extermal genital system. We report a 53 year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus who presented with invasive amebiasis
involving liver and both kidneys, which was confirmed by demonstration of trophozoite of amoeba in the drained pus. In our knowledge, this is the first report of amebiasis involving both kidneys. The patient was treated with combination therapy
of
repeated fine-needle aspiration, metronidazole and chloroquine with good result Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and poor nutrition may be the cause of systemic amebiaseis.
